The British Garden Centres Story.

The story of the British Garden Centres begins in the sleepy Lincolnshire village of Woodthorpe, the home of our company founders, Charles and Robert Stubbs. Charles started the business whilst still at school - he sold seedlings and Leylandii to neighbours and passers-by from a stall at the end of their drive.

Through hard work, determination and drive, the business grew with Woodthorpe Garden Centre, being their first, opening in 1987. The business flourished under the ownership of Charles and brother Robert, becoming famous for, amongst other things, huge sales of compost to keen gardeners from all over the region. Over the years, the brothers’ reputation grew far and wide. They were featured on the local news program Calendar for their entrepreneurial skills.

The business at Woodthorpe grew and, with the addition of Brigg Garden Centre, the company’s reputation for quality and value began to spread. Further centres were added, and the company became known as the British Garden Centres Group. Since 2018 the company has grown at a rate even faster than Charles and Robert could ever have imagined and now has 60 centres around the country. Their ambition to have a British Garden Centre within easy reach of everyone in the UK really is starting to take shape!

As the number of centres has grown so has the number of people in the team. The family are delighted that the next generation is now working in the business. Whatever challenges the world may throw at us we will remain true to our founding principles – great plants and products all year round, first-class service delivered by a wonderful team and all at affordable prices. We hope you love our centres as much as we do.

I visited today with my Mum and 2 children, it was beautiful inside today as they have all of the Christmas decorations in now, its been done really nicely, there is also so much other items to look at and under construction, was a very large area which we was informed would be lots of concessions. We visited the cafe for the first time today, unfortunately my review of the cafe is not great, they are selling Apple Juices that you can buy in home bargains for 49p, for £3.85, I got x2 tiny apple juice cartons that cost £1.10 each! I had a hot chocolate at £3.50, it was like warm milk, could barely taste chocolate, my children chose a children's breakfast £3.99 each, served on a tiny plate, although they said it was nice, a bit pricey for what you get, one plus was the play area, £1.50, which is a great price, my 5yr old had a great time in there and a bonus that we could take our food and drinks and sit and eat in there so we could watch the kids. Overall we enjoyed looking around but must say a lot of the items are way overpriced especially the toys, so other than our purchases in the cafe, we didn't make any purchases of products. The works inside is an excellent shop and has excellent prices.

The garden centre is a nice place to go randomly, especially at Christmas time. Huge selection of plants and pet fish, nice layout. Although it can be extremely hot and stuffy, maybe air conditioning needs to be placed. Prices of children's drinks can be pricey. Oasis summer fruits was like £3.00? 🧐 Some staff can be a bit rude mentioning there training on plants, when you're just engaging on a conversation when seeking advice, without being rude yourself.

The whole layout of the garden centre has changed. For the better I think. Seems to be very well stocked too. Glad to see they still have the bargain corner. I rescued some plants there which, once potted on, will thrive.
