Hartley's Nurseries is now in the hands of the sixth generation of Hartleys - a rare achievement for a family business these days. Bill Hartley, a former international athlete, is the current owner of the business together with his wife, Ann-Louise. Their daughter, Annabelle, has recently joined them in the business, whilst their son, Tom, is a professional cricketer with Lancashire County Cricket Club. Hartley's Nurseries is located on

the family smallholding, which has been run as a horticultural business by the Hartley family since 1890.

Bill's athletics career spanned the 1970s and 1980s and his achievements included European Gold and Commonwealth Silver medals. His race was the 400m hurdles, plus he was a regular member of Britain's men's 4x4 relay team. Ann-Louise has  over 25 years experience as a florist, since she completed her NVQ in floristry at Myerscough College back in 1993. Combined with her degree in Management, Ann-Louise has a wealth of industry knowledge to share with the Hartley's team.

They serve excellent food at affordable prices prepared to your order and served by friendly waitresses. The restaurant is a tad transport cafe in its layout. I must say the coffee they serve is excellent always hot and full flavoured. My wife says their tea is the same, it is a drink I have never liked but she rates it and she is quite fussy. The plants sold are better than most places because they are mostly grown in extensive nurseries on site. It has to be said no where beats Hartleys floral displays for sheer beauty and range be it for celebrations or condolences theirs are head and shoulders above all opposition in this area. We regularly meet with friends there for coffee and a snack. Such meetings used to be spread around other garden centres on a rotation basis, that rotation consists only of Hartleys, give them a try.
