A Passion for Gardening

For well over 80 years the Bickerdike family have been in the horticultural industry. When his father retired, Mark Bickerdike and his wife Debbie decided to follow the family tradition and start a Garden Centre of their own. In 1999 they opened Bickerdikes Garden Centre, employing the same principles as previous generations of the family, Quality, Choice, Value for money and above all personal service.

The aim of Bickerdikes Garden centre is to offer you a comprehensive choice of expertly sourced products and services for the home and garden, all delivered with friendly welcoming and expert advice.

First time visit to Bickerdikes and I will be back!! Lunch was a delicious prawn sandwich (packed with prawns) which was served with a lovely fresh bit of salad and crisps. With a price tag of £6.95, I thought it was value for money. On to the gift section which was crammed with things from candles to jigsaw puzzles! Great selection of greetings cards; I bought some for next year! Then out to the plants. I was after Rosemary and both types of parsley. I managed to get the Rosemary but they didn’t have flat leaf parsley. When I asked, I was told that they might have some in next week but if not, definitely the week after. It was obvious by the look of the plants that the people who work there care about them. The staff I interacted with were all really friendly. Highly recommend a visit.

Medium sized but we'll stocked garden centre, plus goats a pond with fish and a nice cafe with an outside terrace. We turned up just too late for breakfast which looked great but instead had nice toasted foccaccia sandwiches. Having now gone back and had a breakfast too and again for cake I happily recommend those too!

Although not huge, it's a delight. Perfect match of outside space with plants and pots etc, and indoor cafe and shop. The range of goods for sale is amazing. We've eaten in twice now and very impressed.

The newly refurbished cafe is beautiful, but the comfortable, cosy atmosphere has gone. I have been going for over 10 years and it was so friendly and easy going. Now the staff seem tense, the new manager is not good with customers and the atmosphere is similar to any gastro pub. I feel so sad. I have to say as well that the food is not as good as before, but seems more expensive. I hope it changes back and these are just teething problems. Update Jan 2022 The surroundings are beautiful, the drinks and food delicious, but the service is confusing, it is table service, but to get the attention of the waitresses to pay the bill is almost impossible and if one dares to go to the till personally the reaction is frosty. Also it would be understandable if it was packed, but quite a few times now it has been half empty and we have had our cups taken and ironically been given the bill in under 40 minutes, with the clear message to leave or order more. It is such a shame, what used to be the friendliest coffee shop, is feeling more and more unwelcoming and cold. ☹️
